Delivering an evidence-based, people-centric and measurable culture change tool.

Background

Social Machines is a behavioural science research and innovation firm focused on helping companies build strong cultures that fuel their growth and success.

People are our biggest cyber security vulnerability NOT technology. Yet we continue to struggle to design people-centric solutions that deliver sustained security behaviour change. It’s culture that matters. Social Machines exploits its behavioural science expertise in taking a systems based, holistic approach to understanding the complex reasons for why we behave in the ways that we do. Improved culture and stronger behaviours will follow.

Opportunity

Following many years of research and market testing Social Machines has developed a new security culture taxonomy that identifies the 4 critical factors that drive positive security culture.

This approach has evolved into the Temperature platform, which equips senior security and business management teams with:

  • An understanding of their employees feelings and attitudes to cyber security.
  • Invaluable security culture metrics and benchmarking capabilities
  •  Insights into the areas of highest security culture risk.
  • The tools to design, prioritise and implement appropriate culture change management programmes.
  • The ability to track and evolve their security culture over time.

Social Machines had successfully piloted their Temperature product with two well-known, multinational organisations, but needed to know how they could scale it, and fast.

Approach

Social Machines approached Elemental Concept to assess the technical rigour and potential scalability of their PoC. We initially conducted a detailed technical assessment on the platform, paying particular attention to:

  • Scalability
  • Cost efficiency
  • Data security

Armed with the feedback from the pilot schemes and our due diligence findings, we and our client came to a shared conclusion: the product needed a complete re-architecture to serve as the foundation of a successful SaaS product.

When you’re developing and launching a new software product to the market you need to work with people and a development team you can trust. This doesn’t just mean delivering on time and on schedule. It means a team who are dedicated to understanding what the customer needs are, how to future proof your product and who behave as real partners dedicated to making the product successful. That’s everything Elemental Concept have given to Social Machines in developing our ‘Temperature’ organisational culture measurement and change platform.

Outcomes

With mobile-first connectivity, field setup is now simple and fast. Admins can activate devices on the spot, saving time and reducing the margin for error. The desktop app gives teams a clear view of what’s happening across trials, with the flexibility to adapt as needs evolve.

The platform was recently launched and is now in internal testing, with a second release planned later in the year, featuring additional features, user feedback, and a deeper focus on UX.

Understanding human behaviour is critical in cybersecurity, but it’s typically missing from the multiple tools that many businesses rely on. Temperature fills that gap. And with a secure, scalable foundation in place, Social Machines can now take that insight to a much wider market.
