Supporting a cloud transformation journey and ensuring resilience of legacy systems
Background
Elemental Concept began working with this client in the early 2000s, initially offering ad hoc consultancy around open-source technologies. Over time, we helped replace their ecommerce system with a modular platform built in Java, running on a JBoss Application Server with an Oracle relational database, all integrated with multiple legacy ERP systems.
Opportunity
Fast forward to today, and the client is in the midst of a major re-platforming effort, shifting to a modern, cloud-native ecommerce stack. While the new platform already handles a large volume of customer interactions, the original Java-based platform hasn’t gone away. In fact, it still underpins key parts of the ecommerce experience particularly for larger customers who depend on its complex, tailored functionality. That functionality hasn’t yet been replicated in the cloud.
We needed to support and extend a 20-year-old Java monolith with significant technical debt, while the in-house team pours their focus into building out the new cloud-native stack.
Approach
Elemental Concept has been re-engaged to augment the client’s internal dev capability. We have taken ownership of the legacy Java platform, continuing to implement critical features, while also contributing to its gradual and carefully managed decommissioning.
Over the next two years, we’ll help stabilise, support and evolve the monolith where needed, while enabling the client’s team to move forward with the cloud platform uninterrupted.
